How the Mayor is Elected

In accordance with Town Code 2.04.010, Councilmembers shall assume the duties of office and select a Mayor from among their members at the first regularly scheduled Council meeting following the date of the election at which the Councilmembers were elected.

The process ensures that the leadership of the town is quickly established following an election, allowing the newly elected Council to begin their work without delay. This practice promotes continuity and stability within the town’s governance.

Understanding the Process:

Assumption of Duties:
After the general election results are officially canvassed and certified, newly elected Councilmembers are sworn into office. This marks the beginning of their term, during which they take on the responsibilities outlined in the town’s charter and code. The official assumption of duties allows them to participate fully in council activities, including voting on town matters and participating in council discussions.
Selection of the Mayor:
At this first regular Council meeting post-election, the Councilmembers will choose one of their own to serve as Mayor. The Mayor’s role, typically more of a ceremonial leader, also involves presiding over meetings, representing the town at official functions, and often acting as a spokesperson for the Council. This selection is usually based on a majority vote among the Councilmembers.
Date of the Election:
For the purposes of this section, the “date of the election” refers to the date of the official canvass of the general election, not the day of voting itself. The canvass is the process by which the election results are reviewed and validated, ensuring accuracy before being declared official. Only after this canvassing process is completed do the new Councilmembers officially assume their roles.
Importance of This Procedure:
This procedure is crucial for maintaining an orderly and democratic transition of power. By clearly defining the timeline and process for Councilmembers to assume office and for the Mayor to be selected, the town ensures transparency and continuity in its leadership. It also provides newly elected officials with a clear understanding of when they will begin their responsibilities, allowing them to prepare effectively for their roles.
The provisions set forth in Town Code 2.04.010 reflect the town’s commitment to orderly governance and the smooth functioning of its democratic processes. By adhering to these guidelines, the town ensures that its leadership is always representative of the people’s will, as expressed through free and fair elections.
